Onam in 2025

Happy Onam 2025 to all celebrating the festival across Kerala and worldwide! This festive season, Kerala shines with color, dance, and the irresistible aroma of the grand sadhya (traditional Onam lunch with a variety of dishes served on banana leaves). Despite our fast-paced, tech-driven world, Onam in 2025 continues to unite families, friends, and communities in joyous harmony. Whether you’re crafting a vibrant pookkalam (floral decoration) or exchanging heartfelt greetings on social media, this festival reminds us to embrace unity, gratitude, and togetherness. I love how Onam in 2025 has preserved its warm spirit while evolving to fit modern lifestyles, mixing age-old rituals with new-age celebrations.

Onam is more than just a festival; it is the heartbeat of Kerala’s culture, resonating through generations. Passed down like a cherished heirloom, Onam embraces change but never loses its soul. So, dust off your mundu and kasavu sarees, light up your cameras, and gather your loved ones – even if virtually – to begin the festivities. After all, the harvest is not only in our fields but also in every heart ready to celebrate joy, community, and tradition.

The Myth and Cultural Context: King Mahabali and the Spirit of Onam

The story of Onam begins with King Mahabali, a ruler beloved for his just and prosperous reign. His governance was so admired that the gods grew jealous of his popularity. Enter the clever Lord Vishnu, disguised as the dwarf Vamana, who asked Mahabali for three paces of land. With cosmic power, Vamana covered the earth and skies with two steps and sent Mahabali to the underworld with the last. Yet, Mahabali was granted the special blessing to return once every year to visit his people – gifts of return and reunion that shape Onam’s mythic core.

Beyond the myth, Onam honors Kerala’s agrarian roots and community spirit. Celebrated at harvest time, it unites families and neighbors in rituals and feasts that express gratitude and joy. Colorful flower carpets brighten doorsteps, traditional dances animate streets, and all people, regardless of religion or age, join in the festivities. Timeless values of unity, generosity, and communal gratitude shine through, making Onam a festival that bridges ancient stories with today’s culture.

The 10-Day Extravaganza: Tradition in Motion

Onam’s ten day-long festivities begin with Atham and culminate on Thiruvonam, offering a rich blend of traditions and celebrations. On each of these days, families sticking on to age-old traditions craft intricate pookkalams, colorful symbols of prosperity and grandeur. The festival is kept alive with shopping sprees, temple visits, and cultural programs, filling Kerala with vibrant energy and togetherness.

Exciting events like the Vallam Kali (snake boat races) and Pulikali (tiger dances) electrify the atmosphere, while community feasts gather old and young alike. Personally, I am torn between nostalgia of the Onam festivities of an age gone by and the modern instant Onam! Despite Onam being relegated to virtual meetups and smaller celebrations arranged in educational institutions and offices, the festival still resonates strongly with shared unity and cultural pride.

Artistic Traditions: Pookkalam and Pulikali

First and foremost, the exquisite pookkalam decorated homes during Onam stands as the festival’s artistic hallmark. Starting with simple arrangements on Atham day, it evolves into impressive, complex designs showcasing Kerala’s rich connection to nature and creativity. Lately, many families have embraced eco-friendly alternatives, combining tradition with sustainability by opting for digital or green pookkalams.

Similarly, pulikali dances, featuring men painted as tigers, inject humor and vibrant energy into the celebrations. The dancers’ rhythmic, playful movements mesmerize spectators young and old, binding communities in shared joy. For me, pulikali perfectly captures Onam’s festive spirit – full of liveliness, amusement, and cultural continuity. From city streets to rural villages, these art forms keep Kerala’s rich heritage alive and celebrated.

The Grand Feast: Onasadya’s Timeless Yum

Of course, no Onam is complete without the extravagant onasadya, a vegetarian banquet cherished across Kerala. Featuring over 25 delicious dishes served on banana leaves, sadhya blends crisp coconut, aromatic spices, and local harvests into culinary perfection. Whether prepared at home or ordered in today’s fast-paced life, sadhya embodies the heart of Onam celebrations, nourishing both body and spirit.

In addition, many modern families balance tradition and convenience by ordering delivered sadhya or experimenting with fusion recipes. Regardless, the palpable spirit of gratitude and communal joy pervades every meal. From personal observations, even as lifestyles become increasingly digital, sharing sadhya remains the strongest cultural and emotional connection during Onam. Onam in 2025 is no different.

Kerala’s Harvest Festival: Where Tradition Meets Modern Reality

Onam undoubtedly celebrates Kerala’s storied agricultural heritage and harvest bounty; yet it adeptly responds to contemporary changes in lifestyle. Urbanization and technology have reshaped rural rhythms, but Onam remains a vibrant connection for city folk and villagers alike.

Moreover, the Malayali diaspora continues to nurture and celebrate Onam across the globe—from Melbourne to Dubai, and from London to New York. These celebrations creatively merge international influences with Kerala’s cultural essence, embodying a living tradition of resilience and adaptability. Thus, Onam stands as a testament to how heritage can thrive and evolve across borders and generations.

Why Onam in 2025 Still Shines

Most importantly, Onam’s strength today lies in its remarkable inclusiveness, embracing all communities and faiths in collective celebration. Its global spread has connected Malayalis worldwide, reaffirming identity and fostering belonging. Equally significant, the festival stimulates economic growth, uplifting farmers, artisans, retailers, and small businesses, thereby sustaining tradition and local economies.

Additionally, cultural visibility flourishes as art forms like Kathakali, Pulikali, and Vallam Kali captivate audiences near and far. Families maintain connection in adapted formats, blending tradition with contemporary life through digital sadhyas and scaled-down celebrations. Altogether, Onam remains a powerful cultural marker that nurtures pride, unity, and the Malayali spirit of bonding.

Drawbacks of Present-Day Onam

Nevertheless, Onam now faces undeniable challenges. Environmental damage caused by excessive plastic and unsustainable materials threatens the festival’s eco-friendly image. Simultaneously, alcohol misuse spikes during the festival, raising health and social concerns. Furthermore, financial strain burdens families pressured by commercialism and social media’s portrayal of a “perfect” Onam. Increasingly, the deep rural and agrarian roots erode, disconnected by urban living. Tourism sometimes emphasizes spectacle over authenticity, diluting cultural experience.

Additionally, traditional family bonds weaken under urban lifestyle constraints, leading to a diluted ritualistic presence and moral essence. Generational disconnect introduces challenges in passing traditions to the youth, while the loss of simplicity transforms celebrations into extravaganzas. Health concerns emerge from overeating and excess, compounded by mounting social media pressure and competition. Meanwhile, many folk artists find themselves exploited in brand-driven commercial events. Lastly, political and commercial hijacking risks distorting Onam’s true cultural meaning.

Drawbacks vs Positives of Present-Day Onam

Malayali Community Spirit: Old Bonds Renewed

At its core, Onam is a celebration of the resilient and vibrant Malayali community spirit that spans generations, religions, and continents. Whether celebrated in lively neighborhoods in Kerala or by diaspora groups across the globe, Onam unites hearts with a sense of shared heritage and belonging. This spirit transcends individual families, fostering communal harmony that strengthens not only bonds of blood but also friendships and neighborhood camaraderie. Over the years, even as our lifestyles have grown busier and more digitally connected, Onam remains a time when Malayalis pause to reconnect with their roots and with each other.

Moreover, technology has enriched this community spirit by enabling virtual gatherings and sadhyas that bridge physical distances. Many expats, who cannot return home for the festival, organize online celebrations that recreate the warmth and joy of Onam, no matter where they are. In Kerala, neighborhood events and localized cultural programs continue to thrive alongside these high-tech connections. I personally find it inspiring how Onam nurtures cultural continuity through evolving forms, proving that a community’s heart is not limited by geography but beats stronger through shared celebration. Indeed, this renewal of bonds, both old and new, keeps Onam’s spirit alive and ever flourishing.

Onam in 2025—Timeless Yet Evolving

Ultimately, Onam in 2025 stands as a remarkable blend of resilience and reinvention. Although this festival is deeply rooted in Kerala’s ancient traditions and mythologies, it continues to evolve with the times without losing its soul. As Kerala joyfully welcomes back the legendary King Mahabali, we are reminded not only of our rich cultural heritage but also of the dynamic spirit that embraces change while honoring the past. This beautiful balance between preservation and progress reflects the very essence of Kerala itself – a land where tradition lives not as a relic but as a vibrant, living force.

Moreover, as we partake in colorful pookkalams, grand sadhya feasts, and spirited cultural events, we engage in a timeless dialogue between generations. Each flower laid, every drumbeat heard, and every shared meal serves as a thread weaving together our collective identity. Yet, beyond the festivities lies a powerful call for reflection. Let Onam in 2025 inspire us to strengthen community bonds, rekindle the purity of our rituals, and protect our environment from the perils of excess. Above all, it urges us to resist allowing commercialization and politics to dilute the festival’s sacred meaning.

Finally, let us ask ourselves: How can we, as individuals and communities, breathe fresh life into Onam so that it remains not just a celebration of the past but a beacon for the future? If Onam teaches us anything, it is that true strength lies in unity, humility, and gratitude. So, as we set out to celebrate this momentous festival, let us commit to making Onam in 2025 a living testament to Kerala’s enduring spirit – a festival that welcomes all, uplifts all, and shines as a glowing example of religious and cultural harmony and joyous togetherness for India and the world to emulate. Once again, on behalf of ExpressIndia.info, I wish all my readers a Happy and Prosperous Onam, 2025 💕

  1. The good king Mahabali, one of the legends of Kerala, lost his land to Lord Vishnu who gained it in the myth which explains the festival of Onam, but Vishnu in his turn was a loser of land in the creation myth of the Nambudiri Brahmins, traditionally the highest of all the many castes of Kerala. After playing his trick, as the dwarf Vamana, on the unfortunate Mahabali and winning his kingdom from him, Vishnu was incarnated, for the sixth time, as the son of the Brahmin sage Jamadagni and took the name of Parasurama.

If you examine the myth chronologically Mahabali was there even before Parasuram reclaimed the land of Kerala.

So, myth is just a myth, and it abounds in our Hindu scriptures.

Leaving the myth aside, the modern-day celebrations in urban areas are definitely environmental disasters.

In the rural Kerala there aren’t enough children in each household to celebrate this harvest festival.

The parents of children 1 or 2 are left to the care of grandparents so that the parents are elsewhere abroad in pursuit of wealth creation.

But still all over the world mallus do ‘celebrate’ Onam.
